With great pleasure, the Big Wave Grand Prix presents an exclusive interview with Michaela Fregonese, an extraordinary big-wave rider. Michaela began her surfing career at a young age, taking advantage of weekends to venture into the sea and conquering the world's biggest waves in Nazaré. She is the holder of records for big waves surfed in Brazil, and she has represented the country in prominent competitions in Hawaii as well as Portugal.
In this interview, Michaela shares her journey, challenges, and achievements that took her to the pinnacle of big-wave surfing.
Could you tell us a bit about yourself and where you're from?
I was born in Curitiba - Paraná, and started surfing when I was 12, only during the weekends, because Curitiba is 100km from the beach. I started with a Bodyboarder and, at 15, changed to a shortboard. By 17, I had moved to Florianópolis to study tourism at a university and to live close to the sea. I started to compete, and with that, I evolved pretty fast!
I’m 43 years old; my son Vittorio was born when I was 27. Now I have a Tourism Agency and double citizenship: Italian and Brazilian!
When did you start surfing, and what inspired you to begin?
I started when I was 12. My older sister started working in a surf shop and gave me a Bodyboarder; I haven't looked back since then!
Are there any special moments or events in your life that are connected to surfing?
I believe that of everything I've experienced in surfing, the tube I took in Jaws, where I was runner-up in the World Ride of the Year, at the Big Wave Awards, was the most incredible moment of my career because I know that few surfers have ever done a tube like that one, so I feel very blessed to have lived through a moment like that!
What motivates you, and why did you choose big-wave surfing?
My relationship with big waves has always been there because ever since I started surfing, I stood out when the sea rose!
And it was on days with big waves that I won championships. I was always at ease in the sea; when I was a child, I used to be insecure in my life, but when I went into the sea, that insecurity went away, and I felt powerful, and when the sea rose, I felt thrilled, and it is still like that today!
I love riding big waves; I love the adrenaline that big wave surfing gives me, and that's where I find myself. I connect with my true self; it's in this physical and emotional state, trying to transform fear into adrenaline, riding a giant wave, taking a tube, catching a massive wave while paddling, or even putting my partner on an big wave, that’s when I take a deep breath, look at the sky and say thank you for being alive, and realize that this is the true meaning of life. That's why I love big waves!
Can you share your experience of your first visit to Nazaré? What makes it significant to you?
My first time in Nazaré was special because I went to film a documentary for Canal Off, so everything was documented. It was incredible; I caught the biggest wave of my life since my first time in Nazaré!
What advice would you give young or new surfers who dream of riding big waves?
I recommend you never give up on your dreams, fight for them, and train hard because catching big waves requires a lot of preparation; get the best equipment, and go for it! Safely, of course!
How do you prepare and train for big-wave surfing?
I usually train daily, whether in or out of the water; I practice Yoga, Swimming, Functional, Bodybuilding, Apnea, etc…
What is your most memorable wave, and what are your favorite surf spots worldwide?
Jaws, because of the tube I did, is the most memorable. I also love Nazaré, Puerto Escondido, Indonesia, and some places in Brazil, such as Fernando de Noronha and Itacoatiara.
What are some challenges you’ve faced in big-wave surfing?
Surfing big waves is one challenge after another; we are tested both physically and emotionally with each surf session; the risk is very high, and everything must be meticulously calculated and planned so that there is no mistake!
What are your goals in surfing?
I want to win championships, break records, surf the biggest and best waves in the world, and leave a legacy for the next generations, showing girls that there is nothing and no one that can slow us down or stop us! I want a Jet Ski in Jaws, one in Maverick, and one in Oahu! I'd also like to surf in Teahupoo and Fiji as I've never been there!
Why does Nazaré hold a special place for you?
Nazaré is unique because the big waves are constant almost every day of the season. The sea is huge, the energy is great, and the setting is perfect for practicing tow-in, logistics, and type of wave; everything favors the sport! And there are also paddling days, which makes the place even more special!
Are there any favorite spots in Nazaré for food and coffee that you’d recommend?
There are some places, such as Esmeralda and Cores e Sabores, among others.
What are your hobbies outside of surfing?
When I'm not surfing, I'm either working at my agency, taking care of my son, or working out, but when I have nothing to do, I like to paint my boards!
What type of surfboard do you use for riding the biggest waves in Nazaré, and why?
I use the tow boards from the Pacelli Model; the weight varies according to the size of the sea. I like to use Kronig to paddle. I'm already used to these boards, so I use them!
Can you provide details about the wetsuits you use, including their thickness, for surfing in Nazaré?
I wear 4'3 for regular days and 5'4 with a hat and boots when it's cold. I don't like wearing gloves; it makes me a bit uncomfortable!
Do you have a favorite surfer? If so, why do you admire them?
I admire Justine Dupont; I think she surfs well!
Have you ever experienced a wipeout? If so, could you describe it?
I've had many wipeouts, but the worst was in Hawaii, in the Himalayas. It was an outer reef on the day that Laura Enever broke the world record. I paddled the record wave and didn't get in; when I looked back, there were about five waves bigger than that one coming. I took them all on my head. I spent a long time underwater; not even the inflatable vest could make me go up… This time, I thought I was going to die!
Also, one day, I hit my head hard in a Slab in Brazil… But thank God I was wearing a helmet; otherwise, I wouldn't be here anymore!
What do you consider key to success in big-wave surfing?
I believe that the most important thing to be successful is doing what you love, doing it well, and working with dedication, affection, and respect for others. By doing this, you will be successful.
What safety measures do you take during big swells, and how large is your team tackling them (including surfers, jet-ski drivers, safety drivers, spotters, etc.)?
In Nazaré, the security logistics are very complex. You need a second and third rescue, a spotter, a good pilot to put you in the waves, an inflatable vest, and another for impact!
Who has your back in Nazaré?
Topázio Bank helped me buy a Jet ski in Nazaré with my partner, Joana de Andrade, and Lino Bogalho from Nazaré Water Fun.

Michaela começou a sua carreira no surf ainda jovem, aproveitando os fins de semana para se aventurar no mar e agora ela está conquistando as maiores ondas do mundo em Nazaré. Ela é dona de recordes de maiores ondas surfadas no Brasil, ela já representou o país com destaque em competições no Havaí e em Portugal.
Nesta entrevista, Michaela compartilha sua jornada, os desafios e as conquistas que a levaram ao ápice do surf de ondas gigantes.
Você poderia nos falar um pouco sobre você e de onde você é?
Nasci em Curitiba - Paraná, Comecei a surfar aos 12 anos apenas aos fins de semana, pois Curitiba fica a 100 Km da praia. Comecei com Bodyboarder e aos 15 anos migrei para pranchinha. Aos 17 fui morar em Florianópolis, para fazer faculdade de Turismo e viver próximo ao mar. Comecei a competir, e com isso evolui muito rápido!Hoje tenho 43 anos, fui mãe aos 27 do Vittorio, tenho uma agência de Turismo; e tenho dupla cidadania: Italiana e Brasileira!
Quando você começou a surfar e que te inspirou a começar no esporte?
Comecei aos 12. Minha irmã mais velha começou a trabalhar em uma loja de surf e me deu um Bodyboarder, desde então nunca mais parei!
Há algum momento ou evento especial na sua vida que esteja ligado ao surf?
Acredito que de tudo que vivi no surf, o tubo que peguei em Jaws, onde fui vice campeã Mundial Ride of the Year, no big Wave Awards foi o momento mais incrível da minha carreira, pois eu sei que poucos surfistas já fizeram um tubo como aquele, então me sinto muito abençoada por ter vivido um momento como esse!
O que te motiva e por que você escolheu surfar em ondas grandes?
A minha relação com as ondas grandes sempre esteve presente, pois desde que comecei a surfar, eu me destacava quando o mar subia!E era em dias de ondas grandes que eu ganhava campeonatos. Eu sempre fiquei à vontade no mar, quando eu era criança costumava ser insegura na minha vida, mas quando eu entrava no mar essa insegurança passava e eu me sentia poderosa e quando o mar subia me sentia muito feliz, e até hoje é assim!Eu amo pegar ondas grandes, amo adrenalina que o surf de ondas grandes me proporciona e é lá onde eu me encontro, me conecto com meu verdadeiro eu, é nesse estado físico e emocional, tentando transformar o medo em adrenalina, dropando uma onda gigante, tirando um tubo, pegando uma bomba na remada, ou até mesmo colocando minha parceira numa onda gigante, é nessa hora que respiro fundo, olho para o céu e agradeço por estar viva, e realizo que este é o verdadeiro sentido da vida. É por isso que amo as ondas grandes!
Pode compartilhar a experiência da sua primeira visita à Nazaré? O que torna essa visita importante para você?
Minha primeira vez em Nazaré foi especial, pois fui gravar um documentário para o canal off, então tá tudo documentado. Foi muito incrível, com certeza peguei a maior onda da minha vida desde a minha primeira vez em Nazaré!
Que conselho você daria aos surfistas jovens ou iniciantes que sonham em surfar ondas grandes?
Eu recomendo que nunca desistam dos seus sonhos, lutem muito por eles, treinem muito pois pegar ondas grandes exige um grande preparo, vá atrás dos melhores equipamentos, e se jogue! Com segurança, é claro!
Como você se prepara e treina para surfar em ondas grandes?
Eu costumo treinar todos os dias que posso, seja dentro ou fora da água, pratico Yoga, Natação, Funcional, Musculação, Apneia etc...
Qual é a sua onda mais memorável e quais são os seus pontos favoritos para surfar no mundo todo?
Jaws devido ao tubo que fiz é o mais memorável. Também amo Nazaré, Puerto Escondido, Indonésia e alguns lugares do Brasil como Fernando de Noronha e Itacoatiara, entre outros.
Quais são alguns dos desafios que você enfrentou no surf em ondas grandes?
Surfar ondas grandes é um desafio atrás do outro, somos testados tanto fisicamente como emocionalmente a cada sessão de surf, o risco é muito grande, tudo deve ser minimamente calculado e planejado, para que não haja erro!
Quais são os seus objetivos no surf?
Quero ganhar campeonatos, bater recordes, surfar as maiores e melhores ondas do mundo, e deixar um legado para as próximas gerações, mostrando para as meninas que não existe nada nem ninguém que possa nos diminuir ou nos parar!Gostaria de ter um Jet Ski em Jaws, um em Maverick e um em Oahu!Também gostaria de surfar em Teahupoo e Fiji pois nunca estive lá!
Porque Nazaré é um lugar tão especial para você?
Nazaré é especial pois as ondas grandes são muito constantes, quase todos os dias da temporada o mar tá gigante, a energia é muito grande e o cenário é perfeito para prática do Tow in, logística, tipo de onda, tudo favorece a modalidade! E também tem seus dias de remada, o que torna o local ainda mais especial!
Há algum local favorito para comida ou alguma cafeteria em Nazaré que você recomendaria?
Tem alguns lugares, Esmeralda, Cores e Sabores entre outros.
Quais são os seus hobbies além do surf?
Quando não estou surfando estou ou trabalhando na minha agência, ou cuidando do meu filho, ou malhando, mas quando não tenho nada pra fazer eu gosto de pintar minhas pranchas!
Qual o tipo de prancha que você utiliza para surfar nas maiores ondas de Nazaré e porquê?
Uso as pranchas de Tow in da Pacelli Model, o peso varia de acordo com o tamanho do mar, gosto de usar Kronig para remar. Já estou acostumada com essas pranchas, por isso eu uso elas!
Pode fornecer detalhes sobre o wetsuit que você utiliza, incluindo a espessura, para surfar em Nazaré?
Uso 4'3 para dias normais e 5'4 com gorro e botinha quando está muito frio. Não gosto de usar luvas, me atrapalha um pouco!
Você tem um surfista favorito? Se sim, porque você o(a) admira?
Admiro a Justine Dupont, acho que ela surfa muito!
Você já experienciou algum caldo? Se sim, pode tentar descrever para gente como foi?
Já tomei muitos caldos, mas o pior deles foi no Hawaii, em Himalaias. Foi um outer reef, no dia que a Laura Enever bateu o recorde mundial. Eu remei na onda do recorde e não entrei; quando eu olhei para trás estava vindo umas 5 ondas maiores que aquela, tomei todas na minha cabeça, fiquei muito tempo embaixo d'água, nem o colete inflavel me fazia subir… Dessa vez pensei de verdade que ia morrer!Também, um dia, bati muito forte minha cabeça em um Slab no Brasil… Mas graças a Deus eu estava de capacete, caso contrário, eu não estaria mais aqui!
O que você considera a chave do sucesso para o surf de ondas grandes?
Creio que o mais importante para ter sucesso é você fazer o que ama, fazer bem feito, trabalhar com dedicação, carinho e respeito ao próximo. Fazendo isso você terá sucesso.
Que medidas de segurança você toma durante grandes ondas e qual é o tamanho da sua equipe para enfrentá-las (incluindo surfistas, pilotos de jet ski, pilotos de segurança, spotters, etc.)?
Em Nazaré, a logística de segurança é muito complexa. Você precisa de um segundo e terceiro resgate, você precisa de um spotter, de um bom piloto para te colocar nas ondas, precisa de um colete inflável e mais um de impacto!
